As we are beginning a new season here in Airdrie (you can read more about that here), it will not be as Cornerstone Church but with a new name, Hillside Church.

Now, I know initially you may say ‘There is no hills here’ but there are several reasons that God has led our church to that to that that name.

First, Airdrie means Kings Heights.  The name of the community where we find ourselves, Airdrie is called that because of its elevation.  Its on a hill. We are on the edge of the foothills.  Sharp Hill is literally down the street and if you go out the backdoors here you will see that we sit literally on the side of a hill.

Second, Jesus throughout his ministry often would spend time on the hillside.  He preached from the hillside, he would often withdraw to the hillside to rest, to spend time with his father, and he would go to pray, on the hillside.  And when he died, he died on the hillside.

And third, God had given the church a passage from scripture, full of promises of what God is going to do in this season.

The passage is Jeremiah 30:18-22   “‘I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents and have compassion on his dwellings; and the city shall be built on its own hill, and the palace will stand in its proper place.”

The picture that God gave here is this picture of things begin set into place where they should be.  The context is Israel coming back from a time of captivity and while Cornerstone Church was certainly not captivity the picture of our church being returned to how it once was is significant.  And God says that he will build the city on its own hill.

Then God will make some promises about what its going to happen in this rebuilt city on the Hillside.

“From them will come songs of thanksgiving and the sound of rejoicing. I will add to their numbers, and they will not be decreased; I will bring them honor, and they will not be disdained. Their children will be as in days of old, and their community will be established before me; I will punish all who oppress them.”

And then God makes a couple of statements about what the leadership of this church will look like in this season.

“Their leader will be one of their own; their ruler will arise from among them. I will bring him near and he will come close to me — for who is he who will devote himself to be close to me?’ declares the Lord. “

Their leader will be one of their own, their ruler will arise from among them.  Some may not know Pastor Brad and Matt's full stories, but Pastor Brad has attended this church since he was 12 years old, Pastor Matt since he was 10.  The leadership of the church, for this season, will come from among the people, that is just what God has done.

And then God concludes these verses with this promise:

‘So you will be my people, and I will be your God.’”

Jesus promised that He will build his church and that through every season that a church would go through, nothing could stand against His plan.  And so we are excited to see what God is going to do in this next season.  A season that will be beautiful in its time.
